The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources

The world relies on a variety of energy sources. In 2018 fossil fuels, such as oil, gas and coal, comprised more than 81 percent of energy consumed. Renewables such as wind power, solar energy biomass, hydroelectricity, and biomass comprise 14 percent. Nuclear energy accounts for another five percent. Different countries use different combinations of energy sources, while balancing economic needs with environmental concerns.

Nature’s energy can be found in a variety of forms like sun, wind waves and ocean. When harnessed, and transformed into more convenient forms of energy, like heat or electricity, they are known as primary sources. When those energies are exhausted, they become non-renewable energy sources.

A lot of fossil fuels and a few of the other nonrenewable energy sources are causing harm to the environment. Oil mining, for instance can devastate the forests of the earth. Hydraulic fracture (fracking) can cause earthquakes and pollution of water. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burnt and contributes to global warming.

Fortunately, the majority of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Wind, solar and hydropower could generate, for instance electricity without having to dig up new sources.

Other sustainable energy sources are emerging, such as the wave and tidal power. However, in order to be used in a large-scale manner they must have efficient distribution networks. These need to be built which will require the use of non-renewable energy. This means that these sources aren’t enough to supply the majority of our energy requirements. It is important to keep in mind that the cost of renewable energy equipment have drastically decreased in recent years and efficiency is growing.
